Newell’s – San Lorenzo
Newell’s Old Boys took an important point on their visit to Colon last Monday, drawing 1-1 away with goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos saving a penalty only 17 minutes before the final whistle. La Lepra succumbed to a single defeat across their last four league matches, winning two and drawing one in that spell. As a result, they accumulated 11 points, occupying ninth spot in the Liga Profesional rankings and five points behind leaders. Newell’s have been strong at home lately, winning their last four matches as the hosting side without even conceding.
San Lorenzo played one of their best games this season in round seven and found it quite easy to beat Gimnasia LP 4-0 at home, with striker Adam Bareiro netting a brace. El Ciclon are now the only Liga Profesional leaders on 16 points, one above second-placed River Plate, after extending their unbeaten streak to five league games (four victories and one draw since losing to Lanus 2-1 in week two). San Lorenzo managed four points from nine available on the road so far, winning one, drawing one and losing one. On Wednesday 15, the team won 3-0 over third-tier side Sarmiento Resistencia in the Copa Argentina first round.
Even if San Lorenzo won’t have striker Andres Vombergar because he is with the slovenian national team, this totals line is way too low. They’ve scored 7 goals during the last week (4-0 vs Gimnasia and 3-0 in Copa Argentina) and Newell’s at home has been scoring in every game, so I can see a couple of goals here.
