Atletico Tucuman – Union
Atletico Tucuman fans will have felt devastated after the team’s 1-1 home stalemate against Rosario Central last Thursday as Ramiro Carrera missed a penalty in stoppage time. Having won only one of their last four matches in league action (along with one draw and two defeats), El Decano made it 45 points in the Liga Profesional and are now trailing leaders Boca Juniors by three. However, this remarkable campaign allows them to occupy one of the Copa Sudamericana spots in the aggregate table. Atletico Tucuman are now on 14 home matches unbeaten, having won nine and drawn five in that spell.
Union Santa Fe are now unable to overcome their crisis. Last time out, the team showed another worrying performance and ended up losing 1-0 away at Defensa y Justicia, a result that represented their fifth defeat across the last seven league games (along with one win and one draw). As a result, they ran out of chances to fight for one of the continental tickets, accumulating 30 points in the Liga Profesional (with one game in hand). Furthermore, Union are on eight winless matches on the road in domestic action, having drawn three and lost five since beating Banfield 3-2 in early July.
Boca’s defeat on Sunday gave Atletico one last chance to fight for the championship but for this of course they must win here, so I’ll trust them to take the 3 points against this poor Union.
