Union – Boca Juniors
Union Santa Fe produced a decent campaign in the Copa Liga Profesional but couldn’t make it to the playoffs after their 1-1 away draw in the city derby at Colon in round 13. Having lost only one of their last five league matches (two wins and two draws), the team accumulated 19 points and are now only one point behind away from the Copa Sudamericana spots in the 2021 aggregate table. El Tatengue have been unbeaten in the last six home matches, winning two and drawing four.
Boca Juniors lost to Racing Club on penalties after a scoreless draw in the last league tournament’s semifinals on a neutral ground. The team are winless in their last three league games, drawing two and losing one in regular time. On away turf, they won only one of the last four in domestic action, along with one stalemate and two defeats.
After beating Atletico Tucuman and Sarmiento in the preseason, Boca drew 0-0 against Atletico Mineiro at home in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores’ round-of-16 last Tuesday. Frank Fabra, Edwin Cardona and Agustin Almendra will miss out on Friday. Coach Miguel Angel Russo will field a completely alternative XI ahead of the Libertadores’ return leg next Tuesday. 16-year-old left back Valentin Barco will make his debut.
Boca will have a lineup full of reserves before their Copa Libertadores trip to Brazil so it looks like the perfect opportunity for Union to take something from this game.
