Santos (Brazil) vs San Lorenzo (Argentina)
Santos took a big step towards the Copa Libertadores’ group stage last Tuesday, when beating San Lorenzo 3-1 away. That result means they would advance even losing 2-0 in the return leg (which they will host at Estadio Mane Garrincha in Brasilia due to Covid-19 restrictions in Sao Paulo). Last Saturday, coach Ariel Holan fielded an alternative XI against Botafogo SP at home, drawing 0–0. O Peixe managed six points in five games in the Sao Paulo State Championship to occupy second spot in group D. Santos are unbeaten in their last five competitive matches, winning three and drawing two. They also remain without defeat in seven as the hosting side (four successes and three stalemates since losing to Goias 4-3 in January).
San Lorenzo will have to score at least three goals in order to reach the group stage following their 3-1 home defeat to Santos last week. On Friday, a rotated XI managed a 4-2 away success at newly-promoted side Platense, which allowed them to climb into fifth place in group A on 15 points, one behind the last playoff spot. El Ciclon won three of their last four games in all competitions, along with a single defeat. They also are on four matches unbeaten on away turf, having drawn two and won two straight.
San Lorenzo must win and score at least 3 goals, Santos already showed their offensive power with last week’s 3 goals, so I have to expect an open game here where the visitors need to go forward at all costs.
